Made In Britain

Here at The Tipi Company, what sets us apart from all other tipi manufacturers on the market is our attention to detail, the quality of materials used and total control over our British manufacturing processes within our own factories here in the UK.

All of our tipis and products are made here in Britain. They are handcrafted by our team of experts, at The Tipi Company Headquarters in the heart of England. We believe that when you buy British – when you buy from us – you are investing in skilled craftsmanship that has been handed down through the generations and that the quality is of utmost importance.

We strongly believe in investing in and supporting the British manufacturing community and that it is our responsibility to continue to fly the flag of high-quality, British-made products. We are incredibly proud to have been awarded the Made In Britain mark, the official seal of approval that is a true indication of the quality and reliability of our superior tipis.  The Made in Britain marque we use on all of our products is to help consumers, both in the UK and abroad, identify and choose British quality made tipis.

We build the best tipi tents…

We build the best tipi tents…

We build the best tipis – not all the tipis. There are other manufacturers on the market and we expect our customers to research and find the perfect supplier for them. But please note – no other manufacturer on the market manufactures everything in-house, here in Britain, in their own factories where they have total control over the production process. This is why we can offer bespoke options to clients and sites that need them

We know that our British-based competitors subcontract out the various elements of their tipis (poles and canvas components) to several third-party companies. Other competitors are simply UK distributors of tipis that are made overseas and shipped in to sell here.

Here at The Tipi Company, however, we are proud of our unparalleled British craftsmanship and that our factory team has been employed by us for many years. Loyalty, trust and longevity are the cornerstones of our team’s mentality, and this is reflected in the high quality of our Made In Britain tipis. The quality of our tipis speaks (or shouts!) for itself. If you’re looking for the best tipi tents you can buy, and where your investment will last, you’ve come to the right place.

What are their tipis made from?

  • Our Sand-coloured tipis are made from the best coated canvas on the market, called Coated Campshield. Please read more about our canvas here.
  • Our mudwall is made from military-grade, tear-resistant Cordura fabric that was specifically designed to serve the wear and tear of military use. This makes it perfect for tensioning our tipis and the ability to withstand extreme weather conditions.
  • Our framework is made from Northern Scandinavian slow-grown spruce – the strongest and longest lasting wood available on the market for tipi poles. It is the quality of our framework that has proven our tipis are the strongest tipis in the wind.
  • Our metalwork is made from steel and manufactured inhouse by our experienced team of welders.

Where are their tipis made specifically?

Our team manufactures all of our products in-house, within our own factories and onsite here in the UK. We would love to invite you to come and visit us here at the factory where all of the magic happens.

Are the tipi canvases made in-house, by their own team of fabric technicians, in their own factories (that are owned by their company)? Or are they outsourced to another business?

We have our own factories where we make all of our poles, canvas, and metalwork components. From the tipi canvas, bags they are carried in, straps that are used to tension to the tipis, wooden framework and welding of the metalwork – it’s all done by us with excellent craftsmanship.

Do they manufacture their own poles? Who processes the raw poles to the final finished tipi poles and where is this done? At their premises or off-site? And by who?

We don’t use a third-party woodyard – instead, we have our own! Every tree we receive from Northern Scandinavia is smoothed down to a perfect tapered pole, using a unique machine that only we own! There are no “spots” on the pole, it’s not been hand-shaved leaving bumps and lumps everywhere.

Each pole is perfectly smooth, incredibly strong and totally the same as the next. Due to this consistency of tapering and thickness of our poles in comparison to our competitors, it is this reason why our wind loadings are the highest in the industry.

Where do they source their raw poles from? Why have they chosen that type of wood? What qualities does it have?

All timbers aren’t created equal. After scouring forests throughout the United Kingdom, and subjecting the various wood to a number of structural and laboratory tests, we have sadly found that no Welsh or Scottish forest timber can rival the strength and quality of the wood we source from Northern Scandinavia.

It simply isn’t cold enough within these Welsh and Scottish forests, and hence the wood doesn’t grow slowly enough for the growth rings to be closely compacted. All this means is that the closer the growth rings, the slower it has grown (in freezing temperatures), and therefore the stronger it has become.
Our poles are a minimum of 80 years old and of world-class quality – no other wood type compares to the Northern Scandinavian wood we source.

Using our unique “giant pencil sharpening machine”, as we fondly call it, our poles are the only tipi poles in the industry to comply with BS EN 131 – the European Standard for wooden portable ladders and staging. Meeting this standard proves our poles’ strength, rigidity and most importantly safety.
