The Strongest Wood

All timbers aren’t created equal. After scouring forests throughout the United Kingdom, and subjecting the various wood to a number of structural and laboratory tests, we have sadly found that no Welsh or Scottish forest timber can rival the strength and quality of the wood we source from Northern Scandinavia.


It simply isn’t cold enough within these Welsh and Scottish forests, and hence the wood doesn’t grow slowly enough for the growth rings to be closely compacted. All this means is that the closer the growth rings, the slower it has grown (in freezing temperatures), and therefore the stronger it has become.
Our poles are a minimum of 80 years old and of world-class quality – no other wood type compares to the Northern Scandinavian wood we source.


Using our unique “giant pencil sharpening machine”, as we fondly call it, our poles are the only tipi poles in the industry to comply with BS EN 131 – the European Standard for wooden portable ladders and staging. Meeting this standard proves our poles’ strength, rigidity and most importantly safety.

We are the only tipi manufacturer in the world to use the latest technology of Computational Fluid Dynamics to provide the most accurate and safest form of wind loadings you can trust.

Decades ago, basic hand calculations were used to decipher wind loadings for outdoor event structures. Since then the world has evolved to utilising 21st Century techniques, and this includes using CFD Models for accurately calculating precise wind loadings. This project took over two years to complete and many tens of thousands of pounds of investment, working closely with a team of Structural Engineers, our Research & Development team and our CAD Designers – no stone was left unturned and it resulted in our framework being proven to be the strongest, and hence safest tipis in the world.

These test results are the foundations of the CFD models that our expert structural engineers built to simulate the variety of winds a tipi framework can be subjected to.

It is these results that helped us decide where to source our poles from. No other type of spruce (grown in Britain or elsewhere in the world) can compare as far as quality and strength are concerned.

We Weld all our fixtures & fittings inhouse

We have designed the strongest fixtures and fittings possible, as advised by the expert structural engineers who have proven our tipis are the strongest on the market. Working with our in-house team of experienced CAD engineers, these experts advised us on everything from the increased length of screws to the depth of metal plates and widths of fixings – all to ensure the unbeatable strength of our tipis. In turn, our Welding team weld all of our metal fixtures and fittings in-house to the perfect high-quality standard that is synonymous with The Tipi Company brand.

Due to the density of the timber we use, our tipi poles are naturally rot-resistant. That said, when designing the tipi framework we wanted to ensure the longevity of the product for many years to come and took the decision to also treat all of our poles with the latest generation of wood preservative.

The quality of our wooden tipi tent poles, and the way we debark and taper them, are unique to us. It takes many hours to complete and results in heavy-duty tipi tent poles that are 100% consistent in their dimensions, starting wider at the bottom, with a perfect taper to the top.

We own the only tipi pole making machine in the UK. We conduct the whole process in-house, in our own woodyard, so that we have total control over the quality we produce. Other tipi manufacturers outsource this process to another company that will debark and taper the poles by hand, resulting in an uneven surface and a spotty finish. However, our method of perfectly tapering the poles allows our wind loadings to be totally reliable and our framework to be peerlessly strong.
