The wind is a powerful force of nature. Its force on the sides of the tipi and the pressure exerted is called the wind loading. If your tipi is going to be a structure you can rely on, it needs to be able to withstand a high wind loading in a gale or storm. As a family business, we know how important safety is.
Compared to other manufacturers, we go the furthest to ensure our tipis are strong enough to stand up to 60mph. Although we would advise against holding a party inside a temporary structure when winds are that high, your tipis will certainly be safe left alone, after securing all the sides down.
Due to their conical shape, they are much more robust than a traditional straight-sided marquee. Due to the conical shape, the wind flows smoothly around the structure, minimising resistance and reducing the risk of strong gusts causing significant damage.
We are the only manufacturer to use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a software tool used in aerospace industries and Formula 1 motorsport. When we design our tipis, they are tested in virtual environments by structural engineers to ensure they withstand high wind loads in extreme conditions. CFD has helped us develop and innovate the design of our tipis to ensure they withstand the harshest environments.
All our designs go through a process called Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In this phase of our design process, we test our tipis reactions to vibration, heat, and other natural forces. Whether it is wind, rain, snow, or shine, we know our tipis will stand tall and protect their occupants from the elements. FEA and Computational Fluid Dynamics allow us to design and manufacture the strongest tipis in the wind, and the world. Our tipis are beyond comparison with others, as we are the only manufacturer to use this technology. Other tipi manufacturers only use basic hand calculations for their wind loading data, but we have heavily invested 2 years and many tens of thousands of pounds into producing our wind loadings calculations.
When you become a customer of The Tipi Company, you will receive comprehensive guidance on how to operate your tipis safely in the wind. Detailed wind loadings relative to the formations you are building will be provided so that you can make safe plans for building your tipis. In addition, an extensive Wind Management Plan, incorporating wind action levels, will also be shared with you. Together these documents will form the backbone of your Health & Safety in the wind.

Our tipis are constructed using slow-growing and strong Scandinavian spruce and a polycotton canvas that is robust enough for any environment. All our tipi fabric is made from coated Campshield that is resistant to UV, water, and mould. It is also inherently flame-retardant.
